Nanowrimo…oops. :”D

After 30 days of Nanowrimo, my final word count sits at 20,396.

Capture

Honestly I haven’t written anything in the past week. Once I got it in my head that there was no way I was going to beat the thing, I lost all motivation. However, this month of writing did lead to some interesting things:

First off, I re-wrote the Nano novel that I did (and won with) in 2012. I decided to do that because I didn’t like the way the plot turned the first time, nor did I like half the characters that I haphazardly threw in there. This time around, while the word count is smaller and the dialogue definitely needs work, I do actually like what I came up with. After two or three more drafts, I might let someone read it. Maybe.

Secondly, I went to two different write-ins this year, something I’ve never done before! Both of them were really fun and it made me enjoy the writing process all the more.

The first one was one for my region which was hosted by my university. Me and one other person showed up, but we ended up getting along and had a good time. Turns out she’s a book lover too and we spent as much time gooing over our goodreads lists as we did writing.

The second one was a write-in I did with a friend of mine at her apartment. The Tuesday night before Thanksgiving, I drove down to her city, about an hour away, and we drank wine. I stayed the night. We got up early, got breakfast, binged on some anime (I got her hooked to Attack on Titan, I’m so proud) and then got down to writing. We did writing sprints that were really beneficial for both our word counts. Throughout the sprints, we also drank more wine and petted her dog. It was the most fun I’ve had in a long time (and my word count went up because of it! :D)

And since then… not a word. That drunk write-in was the last time I even opened the document. Saying I got bogged down with classes and family holiday obligations sounds like a weak excuse, but there you go. So this year, I got about 40% done. Next year, I’m predicting the same since my school situation will be the same, but now I know I LOVE write-ins and hopefully I’ll be able to do some next year as well. 😀

I hope that if you participated that you are happy with your work, whether or not you met your word count. I certainly had fun and produced (dare I say it) not horrible writing.

Now back to my true love: books.

This is the 1/3 way point, hurray! If you’d like to join, go for it!

10 – A song that makes you feel better when you’re down

Radio Nowhere by Bruce Springsteen. Before you say anything, Bruce Springsteen is awesome. And if you don’t think so, you’re just wrong. 😛 This song in particular is just so catchy and makes me happy. 😀

11 – Your favorite instrumental song

Wheel of Time by Blind Guardian. Every time I discover more Blind Guardian music, I realize they’re nerdier and nerdier than I thought. This song is obviously a play on Robert Jordan’s series and they have a whole album dedicated to The Lord of the Rings… it’s so fantastic. :”D I love them more and more every time I listen.

12 – A song you’re ashamed you like

There aren’t any songs I’m ashamed of liking. If I like it, I like it. So I guess I’m going to pick a song a like that if you would know my typical music tastes, you might be surprised that I like? I guess? This song is definitely out there, haaaa. NO SHAME. Malchik Gay by TaTu

November Wrap-up and December Currently Reading

Hello! Due to Nanowrimo (which I failed miserably) combined with classes I didn’t read much this month. I completed three graphic novels, one novel and one audiobook.

They are:

Amulet volumes 4 and 5 by Kazu Kibuishi –
I’m almost caught up on this one now I think. There are six or seven out, I believe. This series is a cute, light read that I’ve been zooming through by borrowing them through the library. Each book so far as rated a 3-4 stars for me, which is good. I like them. Don’t love them, but I like them, enough to continue the series.

American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang –
I feel like I’m missing something with this guy’s books. I’ve read this one and his other two, Boxers and Saints. Whenever I see anyone reading these, they always rave about them like they’re the second coming or something. And honestly I just thought they were alright. If I remember correctly, each one got a 3 star rating from me but now that I think about it, I feel like maybe it should be a 2.5. I don’t know. This book nor the other ones ever clicked for me, unfortunately. I just don’t see the appeal.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J Maas –
If you have been following my blog for a while ago, there is a chance you remember this post, the ‘Top 5 Books I will never read. Ever’ post. Guess what book was on that post that I’ve since read. I even wrote a blog post highlighting my hypocritical ways. Aaaaand, I liked this book. Really liked it. Didn’t love it, but really liked it. I have the second one borrowed from the library currently and hopefully will get through it before the due date.

The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern –
This was by far my favorite book of the month, though since it was an audiobook and as I mentioned classes and Nano earlier, it took me more like two months to get through it. Regardless, I highly enjoyed this book. It was a pure delight reading it. If you’re curious, I wrote a full review where I try to be all captivating about it and probably fail. Check it out if you’d like.

Onto Currently Reading!

According to Goodreads, I’m currently reading the following:

Though honestly it’s really only the first two that I’ve made any progress on recently. The others have been sitting on my bedside table for a loooong time. I just keep getting distracted by other books. I’ll get to them eventually!

And since this is for December, I get to pull my final TBR Jar Challenge slip, which turned out to be Read a New-to-you author. Aaand considering Yeonmi Park is new to me, hey look at that, I did it.

Otherwise, I made this post recently of books I want to get to before the end of the year, which is what I’m probably going to stick to until January 1st. If I can get more in, fantastic, but we’ll see what happens.

And I’ve mentioned in a past post that I’ll be doing Blogmas this year, so expect a lot of posts from me, including one or two ‘year in review’ things that pop up and ‘reading goals’ blah de blah. You know, the typical end of year posts.

I’ve also been tagged in two book tags that I have yet to get to (I haven’t forgotten, dun worry) so those will be up sometime this month too.

Well that’s it for me. Hope you all read good books this month. Happy reading!

November Book Haul – #3

Ignore what I said about my next book haul being after the holidays. Between a bookoutlet order and a trip to Half Price Books, I got these.

I’m not expecting to get many if any books at all this Christmas, so hopefully I’ll be able to read most of these before getting anymore. Anyways, onto the books:

IMG_2218IMG_2219

I’m not going to go into detail, but if you’d like to hear more about a book, just let me know. :”D Otherwise, titles are:

The Final Empire, The Well of Ascension and The Hero of Ages by Brandon Sanderson

The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson

Station Eleven by Emily St John Mandel

The Glass Sentence by SE Grove

The Time Traveler’s Almanac by a buttload of authors

My True Love Gave to Me by a buttload of other authors

Dreams of Gods and Monsters by Laini Taylor

Night Film by Marisha Pessl

A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

And that’s what I have acquired since my last haul. :”D Hopefully I’ll get to at least the Christmas ones before the new year. And the rest… well, hopefully soon after that.

Happy reading!

30 Day of Music: 7,8,9

Continuing on! If you’d like to join it, feel free to!

7 – A song you like to listen to on max volume

Disturbed’s cover of The Sound of Silence, originally be Simon and Garfunkel. His voice, it is amazing. You can’t listen to this song without getting shivers. You NEED to blast it.

8 – Your favorite metal song

White Pearl, Black Oceans by Sonata Arctica. This song was actually my inspiration for my Nano novel this year! Though I didn’t want to use it for prompt #9 just because of the story in the song – it’s not exactly a positive one.

9 – A song that inspires you

This one is a bit out of my usual listening range, but I’m picking Counting Stars by One Republic. I suppose it doesn’t inspire me persay, but for some reason when I listen to it, I feel really productive. I start cleaning or doing homework. It’s like my anti-procrastination song. I’m sure you’ve heard it. If you haven’t, listen to it!

And that’s all she wrote for today!

Full List of Prompts:

30 Days of Music: 4,5,6

Today are prompts 4, 5, and 6. If you’d like to join in and do the prompts yourself, you’re very welcome to!

4 – Your favorite humorous song

Haaah, my mind immediately goes to Vodka by Korpiklaani. This song man, I feel like this song should narrate my life sometimes. Just sometimes. But listen to this and try not to say ‘What the hell am I listening to’ and then find yourself singing it later anyways.

5 – Your favorite dark (or macabre) song

That would be Scaretale by Nightwish. This is from their Imaginaerum album, which the whole album essentially screams ‘macabre circus’. So this is the macabre-iest of them all. And for this album actually, they made a movie to go along with it. It’s very neat and very dark at times. So this is the scene from the movie where this song is played:

6 – A song that’s special to you and someone else

This is another song from a movie, the Diva Song from The Fifth Element. I grew up watching this movie because my mother loved it so much. This song man, it. is. incredible. You think it’s just gonna be your average opera song, but noooope. Whenever this movie would be on tv, no matter what all of us were doing in the house, we’d all run in and watch this part. It’s fantastic. :”D So it’s special to me and my entire family. (And if you haven’t seen The Fifth Element, go watch it)

That’s all for today. Hopefully you haven’t heard of some of these and found yourself liking them (Or completely hating them) either way, makes for good conversation. 😀 Until next time.
