Monthly Archives: June 2016

Hi Peeps, I’m still alive.

My lungs are functioning just fine. I’m actually reading a decent bit, too. But holy cow, am I tired. You people who work full time with an hour-and-a-half commute on each side, HOW DO YOU DO IT AND HAVE ENERGY FOR ANYTHING ELSE?! TELL ME YOUR SECRETS.

Anyways, I plan on making a couple posts pretty soon, assuming my brain doesn’t fizzle away into nothingness beforehand. Just figured I should post something. I’ll get back on track eventually. Just need a ten year nap first.

So hi. :”D

Time to Test My Self-Restraint.

Today I’m announcing that I’m going to be putting myself on that ‘Read 5, Buy 1’ book limit thing that I’ve seen flitting around. Why is this?

  1. I officially own more unread books than read books.
  2. I just posted a haul, what, three days ago? And I’ve since acquired four more books and it’s only six days into the month… :”D
  3. I’ve noticed that if I’m bored and looking for something to do, my default activity is ‘Go the bookstore’ not ‘Read the books you already damn have’. Aaaand that’s probably not the best way to go about things.

So yes, I think I need this. At the moment, I couldn’t even tell you how many books I own that are unread. I just know by looking at my shelves that it’s more than half. So I’m going to limit myself, woot. There are more important things I should be spending my money on anyways. Like bills.

My rules for myself:

  • Read five books personally owned before buying a new one
  • Manga count as 1/5 of a book. So I have to read five manga for them to count as one of the five books I need.
  • Borrowed/library books don’t count towards the count
  • Monthly wrap-ups will now include progress for this thing.

So as I’ve stated – I’ve already purchased four more books since my last haul, so there will be another haul at some point this summer including those and any I earn during this limit thing.

Two other things to note:

  • My birthday is in August. Books received from that won’t count as ‘Buy 1’ books.
  • Half Price Books is having a clearance sale near me at the end of July. I’ve been waiting for this thing all year, man. Everything is two bucks. TWO. Not gonna count this against me either.
    • Hush, I know. You don’t have to say it. As long as I stick to this goal other than this gonna-be-horrendous-and-wonderful-exception, I’ll be happy with myself.

Mostly, I just want to see if I can do it. I’m a very impulsive shopper – with groceries, books, clothes… everything. I want to prove to myself that I can manage this thing. At some point, I’ll count the number of books I need to read and maybe that’ll click in my brain better, but for now, I want to see how far my will power can go before I inevitably crack like the egg I am. :”D

Taking bets.

Happy reading.

May Wrap Up, June Currently Reading

Hello! It’s summer! After a good absence on my part, here I am again! I actually read books this month, unlike last month, so woot.

Overview of Blog Activity for the Month:

Total posts for May: 13

Reading Overview for the Month:

Books:

Leviathan Wakes by James S.A. CoreyUprooted by Naomi NovikBreakable by Tammara WebberA Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin

For the first three, see my reviews above if you’d like to hear what I thought. I really dug them all, but I don’t want to repeat myself. 😛

The only other book I finished this past month was A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin. I’ve been reading this bugger for forever. Well, listening to it. The audiobook was 41 hours long, man. Forty. One. Hours. It was soooo good though. I think this is my favorite one yet!

Articles:

Nothing nearly as academic as last month, but I read some interesting things:

3 fantasy writers to read while you wait for George R.R. Martin to finish Game of Thrones by Constance Grady

Pretty self-explanatory. You’ll notice a lot of the articles I read will come from Vox. It’s my home page. 😛

What I learned from being the only woman at a startup by Sirena Bergman

This one was an interesting read. I agreed with the author about a lot of things, but not everything. But hey, it was nice getting a fresh perspective.

The Truth About Publishing by Ian Irvine

I think this was the most informative article I read this month. It’s really long, mind you, but if you’re a budding author, take a peek – doesn’t matter if you’re going to try to go through a publisher or go the self-publishing route. This article can be helpful (and don’t let it get you down! He’s just giving facts, not trying to be mean!)

Progress on 2016 Reading Goals:

  • Read 21/50 books
  • Picked up books out of interest instead of hype: 4/4
  • Books unhauled from disinterest or dislike: 0
  • 2/16 16 in 2016 books completed

Progress on Book Riot Read Harder/TBR Jar Challenge:

Woops.

June Currently Reading:

Basically the same as last month, plus a new one. Hopefully after finals I’ll be able to actually finish these damn things.

Life, the Universe and Everything (Hitchhiker's Guide, #3)Assassin's Apprentice (Farseer Trilogy, #1)The Time MachineCaliban's War (Expanse, #2)

Life, The Universe and Everything by Douglas Adams
Assassin’s Apprentice by Robin Hobb
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Caliban’s War by James S.A. Corey

And that’s it! I have a haul coming, too. Got the pictures taken, just need to write the thing. Happy reading!
