Autumn Reading Tag

Hello, a tag today! I wasn’t tagged but since it’s getting closer to winter and I’m still in denial about that, I’m staunchly rooting myself in fall. It’s gonna be fall forever because I said so. Let’s ignore that I scraped ice off my car this morning, shall we.

1) Are there any books you plan on reading over the Autumn season?

I’m going to call ‘Autumn’ until the end of November. Aside from the books I’m already currently reading, I really would like to read Dragon Wing by Margaret Weis. I’m still in that 90s fantasy kick and this one is screaming at me. I might have a buddy read lined up, but I feel like my friend might get impatient waiting for me to start it and do so without me. We’ll see, haha. Either way, I’m going to read this one (I hope).

 

2) September brings back to school memories: what book did you most enjoy studying? And what were your favourite and least favourite school subjects?

There were two books I read in school that I could call my ‘favorites’. I’d even go so far as to call them gateway books. The first is one that I’m sure will make everyone’s list, The Giver by Lois Lowry. I feel like everyone and their mother had to read this book, and rarely do I hear a negative opinion on the thing. This book introduced me to dystopians. The other is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. This is the first classic that I read that I didn’t hate. It showed me that classics can be good. You may laugh or scoff, but this was a huge revelation for 17 year old me.

As for school subjects, it depends. Currently, my favorite subjects are biology and chemistry. I loooove these classes even though they kick my ass across the street. They’re hard, man. But ugh, I love them. During my first degree, my favorite class was behavioral neuroscience. Loved it. It’s actually what convinced me to come back to school to study computer science (long story, but it makes sense, I promise).

In high school, I loved my psychology, sociology and art classes the most, and in elementary school, I also loved art.

I don’t really hate any classes. I’ve always tended to dislike English though, which is funny since I love writing and reading, but I think I just hated being told what to read and write.

3) October means Halloween: do you enjoy scary books and films? If so what are some of your favourites?

I’m going to start off by saying I’m one of those wimpy horror fans. I don’t like gore and I don’t like watching scaries by myself. If I’m watching a movie, I need someone with me and it has to be an actual horror, not a slasher. I don’t find slashers scary, just disgusting. Books though, are pretty chill.

I meant to read some horror books this fall but I didn’t get to it. Last year though, I read Horrorstor, and it was pretty great – it’s set in an ikea knockoff store and it reads like you’re browsing through a furniture catalogue. As the story gets creepier, so does the ‘furniture’ being advertised. Definitely a good one if you’re looking to pick up something different.

And my favorite (probably a tad cheesey) horror movie is Mirrors. There’s a bit of gore in this one, but not too much. I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror while brushing my teeth for a week after this one.

….and I’m not going to link a trailer because every one I could find essentially showed every scary part. Goodness. Trailer design, people.

4) With November it’s time for bonfire night & firework displays. What’s the most exciting book you’ve read that really kept you gripped?

I feel like the person who wrote this question lives in a different part of the world than I do. November is time for being in denial about the potential snow, scraping ice off windshields, and being sad because all the trees are pretty much bald now.

But anyways.

I’m going with The Ask and the Answer and Monsters of Men by Patrick Ness, books two and three in the Chaos Walking trilogy. These two books keep hitting you with twists rapid fire and I still think about them, despite having read them nearly two years ago now. I need to read them again. Eventually.

 

5) What book is your favorite cosy comfort read?

I’ve mentioned this series a million times now, but Rurouni Kenshin by Nobuhiro Watsuki. Set in Meiji Era Japan, it’s a historical fiction following a man slayer who has sworn to never kill again, living in the world he helped create with his carnage. It’s wonderful, it’s funny, it’s cute, it’s action-packed. It’s great. Read.

 

6) Curled up with a good book, what is your hot drink of choice?

Hot chocolate (with peppermint schnapps). :”D

7) Any plans you’re looking forward to over the next few months?

Thanksgiving! Christmas! New Year’s! Flying to Malaysia! The end of this damn semester! My work hours picking up! Christmas shopping! EVERYTHING MAN.
