Top Ten Tuesday: Books that have under 2000 ratings on Goodreads

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by ThatArtsyReaderGirl!

Happy Tuesday! This week’s topic is celebrating Top Ten Tuesday turning ten years old! It gave one of two options: re-do a topic I’ve already done and change it, or do a past topic that I wasn’t around for. I’m choosing the latter, since I’ve only been doing TTT for a few months or so.

This topic is from February of 2019. Some of these are going to be manga, so for fairness’s sake, I’m only going to include it if volume 1 has fewer than 2000 ratings. It’s not fair to use volume 28 of something with 600 ratings when volume 1 has over 97,000 (coughBlackButlercough). So them’s my rules.

As usual, this list is in no particular order.

Our Dining Table by Ori Mita – 716 ratings

Our Dining TableThis is a cute one-shot fluffy romance manga following a young man who has trouble eating in front of others when he meets another guy and his younger brother. They bond, they work through issues, it’s cute, it’s funny. It’s one of my favorite manga, honestly.

Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits by Waco Ioka – 729 ratings

Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, Vol. 1 (Kakuriyo: Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, #1)I actually just wrote a review on this one not too long ago. I really enjoyed it. It’s a fantasy set in a spirit world parallel to our own, and it gives me serious Spirited Away vibes, but darker.

The Diary of Ma Yan: The Struggles and Hopes of a Chinese Schoolgirl by Ma Yan – 808 ratings

The Diary of Ma Yan: The Struggles and Hopes of a Chinese SchoolgirlThis is what it says: It’s the diary of a Chinese girl, living with her family, in the early 2000s. It talks about her struggles with obtaining an education, and just living her life, and it’s a really powerful read.

Goblin Slayer by Kousuke Kurose – 998 ratings

Goblin Slayer, Vol. 1 (Goblin Slayer Manga, #1)This one might technically be cheating because the anime is so popular. Apparently the manga is less well known? Who knows. Anyways, this follows a priestess as she joins a man only known as Goblin Slayer, well, slaying goblins. This one is pretty graphic – violent – so not for the kiddies.

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku by Fujita – 1981 ratings

Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku, Vol 1 (Otakoi: Otaku Can't Fall in Love?!)I think what’s so refreshing about this manga is its simplicity. It follows a light romance between two office workers, as they slowly get closer and be nerdy. And honestly that’s it. It’s just so relaxing.

Silver Spoon by Hiromu Arakawa – 1614 ratings

Silver Spoon, Vol. 1I wrote a review on this one too! This is a nice, sedated-pace manga following a young man who goes to agricultural school, but has never really been on a farm before. It delves into the grit required to work with farm animals, all while being rather funny.

Priest by Min-Woo Hyung – 592 ratings

Priest, Volume 1. Prelude for the DeceasedGothic vampire western. Need I say more.

Stars Between the Sun and Moon: One Woman’s Life in North Korea and Escape to Freedom by Lucia Jang – 1149 ratings

Stars Between the Sun and Moon: One Woman's Life in North Korea and Escape to FreedomI don’t know what it is about them, but I’ve read quite a few memoirs from North Korean defectors, and all of them have stayed in my mind. This one has the fewest ratings out of all of them, so it’s the one I bring up today. Honestly this book is a powerful read.

Hotel Africa by Hee Jung Park – 51 ratings

Hotel Africa, Volume 1This is seriously an underrated manhwa. It’s just.. it’s so good. I wrote a review on it! It follows a young man named Elvis who lives with his mom in a hotel out in the middle of the dessert, and goes into the various stories of the people who end up staying there. It’s a really interesting character study.

O Maidens In Your Savage Season by Mari Okada – 328 ratings

O Maidens in Your Savage Season 1I wrote a review on this one tooooo! This is a coming of age, self-discovery story about a group of teenage girls navigating being a teenager in modern times. It’s awkward, funny, and endearing, and I seriously love it.

And that’s it! Mostly manga… it’s weird how few actual novels I’ve read with lower rating counts. I think it means I need to branch out more. If you’ve read any of the above, lemme know! Happy reading!
