12 Days of Christmas Book Tag!

Happy Sunday, a tag today! Wasn’t tagged as per usual but it’s Christmasy themed, so we’re going with it, peeps. I did this tag last year as well so I’m going to attempt to come up with different answers.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: A partridge in a pear tree!

The partridge stood alone in the pear tree. What is your favorite stand alone?

If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio is definitely up there on my favorites list. I read this book this year and I fell in love with it. The tone that it sets is so melancholy, it’s great!

On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Two turtle doves!

Love is in the air! Who is your one true pairing?

Honestly, same as last year: I don’t really have one. I looked through all the books I read this year but none of them really had a couple that made me swoon. I did read some decent romances but none of them really spoke to me. Maybe next year!

On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Three French hens!

In the spirit of threes, what is the best trilogy you have read?

The Fitz and the Fool trilogy by Robin Hobb is super up there. Last year I chose the Tawny Man trilogy from the same overarching world, so I figured I’d branch out a bit. I gotta tell ya though, I went through my books of 2020 and I didn’t finish a single trilogy this year. None. Wow.

On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Four calling birds!

Since series usually consist of four or more books, what is your favorite series?

Black Butler by Yana Toboso is definitely a new favorite. It’s currently 29 volumes long and is still ongoing. Volume 30 is supposed to come out in English sometime in early 2021 and I’m pumped about it.

On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Five golden rings!

One ring to rule them all! Who is your Favorite Villain/Antagonist?

I really like the undertaker from Black Butler. He’s such a neat character.

On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Six geese a laying!

Creation is a beautiful thing. What is your favorite world/world-building?

The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier has some pretty good world building in it. It takes place in ancient Ireland and plays with fae and fae worlds and all sorts of stuff. I dig it.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Seven swans a swimming!

Who needs seven swans when all it takes is one good animal sidekick? Who’s your favorite animal sidekick?

Nighteyes from Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings series. I picked Nighteyes last year as well but man, he’ll always have my heart.

One the eighth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Eight maid a milking!

Milk is so 18th century. Which book or series takes beverages/food to a whole new level?

Graineliers by Rihito Takarai has a unique take on food, particularly seeds. Seeds give you weird abilities in this world, and are strictly controlled as a result. And as a result of that result, obviously an underground black market for seeds has popped up. This really is an interesting story.

On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Nine ladies dancing!

Dancing is just one skill of a Lady! Who is your favorite kickass female lead?

Loibhan from Juliet Marillier’s Warrior Bards trilogy is pretty great. She’s six feet tall and could pick me up and throw me.

On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Ten lords a leaping!

How about your favorite leading lad?

I really like Ciel from Black Butler (and I like Sebastian too). For a kid, he’s so smarty and witty and such a trooper. He’s pretty entertaining.

On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: Eleven pipers piping!

What is your favorite book or bookish thing with musical influence? (It can be about music, reference music a lot etc.)

Given by Natsuki Kizu is an obvious choice – the main characters are in a rock band. I gotta say though, I think the better medium for this series is the anime, because then you can actually hear the music. But the manga is really good, too.

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave ot me: Twelve drummers drumming!

Drum roll please…what is your favorite read of this year?

Spoiler! You’ll find out at the end of the year :p
