September Currently Reading! ’20

Happy September! This is what I’m currently reading!

Forest Mage by Robin Hobb – This is my current buddy read with Zezee @Zezeewithbooks, and honestly it’s putting me through a number. It’s such emotional turmoil! But weirdly I’m still liking it. But man, my heart.

A Dance With Fate by Juliet Marillier – This book came out on Sept 1st, and I picked it up right away. Me and a buddy read the first one together and we made a special trip to the store together to get the second one! And now we’re reading that too! So far it’s pretty good. I love Marillier’s stuff.

1776 by David McCullough – This is my current audiobook and a nonfiction to boot. I like nonfiction but I definitely have to be in the mood for it. Right now, this is fitting the bill! I’m a bit over half way through it, and am rather enjoying it.

The Wolf by Leo Carew – To be honest, I haven’t picked this up in a bit. I’m very hesitant to put it back on my back-burner list though – I want to finish it. Other books just keep getting in the way, particularly buddy reads where I have an obligation to put them first, y’know? But I am enjoying this, I just need to make the time for it. I’m hoping to get it done this month.

And that’s it! I’m also in the middle of a few manga series, but I’m not mid-volume in any, so I’m not including them above 😛 They’ll be in my wrap up at the end of the month.

Happy reading!

Happy Sunday! Today I’m gonna talk about the books I’m currently reading!

The Wolf (Under the Northern Sky, #1)

The Wolf by Leo Carew – I’m reading this for Finishathon, and today is actually the last day for it. Finishathon was kind of a bust – I literally just read this or not at all, haha. Welp, I’m rusty when it comes to readathons, so hopefully the next one will go better. I do intend on finishing this though – I’m rather liking it.

The Harp of Kings (Warrior Bards, #1)

The Harp of Kings by Juliet Marillier – This book is not part of the readathon, which was my demise. I got farther in this than I did my readathon book! So far it’s pretty decent, and I’m hoping Juliet Marillier puts her characters through some nice development arcs. We’ll see!

Reamde

Reamde by Neal Stephenson – This one I’m developing a love-hate relationship with. The story is awesome. Hell even the four page long tangents I really enjoy. I’m not a huge fan of the writing though, particularly the vocabulary the author uses. I’ll get more into that later though because I already know I want to write a full thing for this. Overall though, it’s decent.

And that’s it! Short and sweet this month. Happy reading!

July Currently Reading! ’20

Currently Reading

Happy July! This is what I’m currently reading!

Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2)

Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins – Picked this up in prep for reading the prequel that came out. As of writing this, I’m three chapters in. I’m rather liking it. Everyone and their mom has read this book so, no synopsis from me!

Shaman's Crossing (Soldier Son, #1)

Shaman’s Crossing by Robin Hobb – This is the first book in the Solder Son trilogy, the last remaining series written by Robin Hobb that I haven’t read yet. It’s also the only trilogy written under this name that’s not part of the Realm of the Elderlings world. I’m buddy reading this with Zezee @Zezeewithbooks and we’re both rather enjoying it so far. It follows the second son of a second son, destined to be a soldier in a world set on the frontier. The main character Navare lives on the edge of the kingdom, where the Plainspeople of the unclaimed lands can be interacted with. The magic in this is really neat – shamans and spirit realms and all sorts of things. I dig it. As of writing this, I’m just over the half way point, so I’m expecting this to be complete by the end of the month.

Reamde

Reamde by Neal Stephenson – This is my current audio book! This one’s a chunker. The book comes in at over 1000 pages, and the audio book is over 38 hours. I listen at 1.5 speed though, so I should have it done in about 29 or 30. This book follows a guy who creates a virtual video game world, and goes into economics of gold farming and yada yada. So far, the plot so far is really neat. The main character though is grating on my nerves. I’m hoping the audiobook will keep me interested – so far it’s the saving grace, hah.

~~~
And that’s it! Happy reading!
June Currently Reading!
Currently Reading
Today is almost June and it’s blowing my mind, people. This is what I’m currently reading:
The Blood Mirror (Lightbringer, #4)
The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks – I feel like I’ve been talking about this one for ages, but I’m still chuggin along. I rather like it so I’m hoping to finish it this month.
The Inheritance & Other Stories
The Inheritance & Other Stories by Robin Hobb/Megan Lindholm – I’m buddy reading this with Zezee @Zezeewithbooks and I’m bad because I was supposed to have it done today. In theory by the time this goes up it’ll actually be done – I only have about fifty pages left and I can knock that out in an hour. Regardless though, this is a short story collection and usually that’s not my jam, but I’m rather enjoying these. Probably because they’re Hobb-y.
If We Were Villains
If We Were Villains by M. L. Rio – This one is my current audio book and a bit outside my usual genre. I’m liking it so far though – the narration is compelling and the characters are interesting!
And that’s it! I’m keeping my currently reading books minimum right now – my ‘main’ read, a buddy read, and an audio book. The format is helping me keep books from falling to the wayside and get stuck on the back burner for years. If you’ve read any of the above, lemme know! Happy reading!
Happy Sunday! I’m in the middle of the OWLs Magical Readathon this month and since the first have already completed two out of the five books towards it! And as of right now, this is what I’m currently reading:
A Natural History of Dragons (The Memoirs of Lady Trent, #1)
A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan – This books fulfills my ‘read a book about dragons’ prompt for my Dragon Tamer training. I’m only about 20 pages in so far so I don’t have much of an opinion yet, though. Hoping to get a good chunk further today.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – This one isn’t an OWLs book, but I’ve been enjoying it all the same. It’s my current audiobook and I’m about two thirds of the way through now. It’s also a 10 in 2020 book, so hooray! It’s really weird to enjoy a book so much when nothing happens. Totally unheard of for me.
In other news, I’ve signed up for a 30 day trial of Kindle Unlimited. I kinda did it by accident – I was in the app trying to look up a book and I went to click on it when the page reloaded and the ‘sign up’ button appeared under my finger. And why there was no confirmation message of ‘are you sure you want to sign up’ is beyond me. So… it’s free for the month – I’ll try it out and then cancel, I guess. But my point is, I’m using it mostly to read manga I’ve been wanting to try but haven’t bought yet, so if you have any suggestions, do let me know.
And that’s it! If you’re participating in OWLs or have read any of the above or have any kindle unlimited suggestions for me, lemme know! Happy reading!
March Currently Reading! | ’20
Currently Reading
Happy March! This is what I’m currently reading!
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (An Absolutely Remarkable Thing #1)
An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green – This is my work book – the one I keep in my work bag and read on my lunch breaks. So far, it’s pretty interesting. I don’t think I’m 100% hooked yet, but that could easily still happen. This got a lot of hype last year or so and while I was interested I wanted to let the focus die down a bit so I wouldn’t be disappointed. I’m glad I did, as I said, I’m not 100% hooked yet and if I would have started reading it at the epitome of its online hype I probably would have been disappointed. But for now I’m just waiting and hoping I’ll get into the story. Which like I said, could still totally happen.
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – This is my current audio book! So far it’s pretty good and I like the characters. The narrator is doing a decent job at distinguishing their voices so it’s pretty easy to follow, which I appreciate. This book will count for Fantasy Bingo if I can get it done this month. I’m already super aware I won’t be completely filling out the card this year, but I’m hoping I can at least get a bingo or two. Maybe next year will be better!
Seven Blades in Black (The Grave of Empires, #1)
Seven Blades in Black by Sam Sykes – I actually just started this book this morning! I read the first chapter, decided ‘yes I’m reading this now’ and then put it down to write this. After, I’ll be picking this book right back up. I honestly don’t know too much about this aside from what the first chapter has told me: That it follows Sal the Cacophony as she tells her tale to her jailers before she’s executed. I tend to like this kind of storytelling in general, so I’m hoping I also like the main character too!
The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince
The Wilful Princess and the Piebald Prince by Robin Hobb – Technically I haven’t started this book yet, but it’s a buddy read I’ll be reading this week with Zezee @Zezeewithbooks! It’ll likely be started today as well, if not tomorrow. This is a novella set in Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings universe and man I am so ready. I miss this world so much, and I hope I don’t get all emotional (but let’s be honest, Hobb’s gonna make me).
And that’s it! There are also a few manga I plan on picking up soon but I figure those read so fast, they’re not worth mentioning now and will just be mentioned in my wrap up instead.
Happy reading!
February Currently Reading ’20
Currently Reading
Happy February! This past month, since I always seem to have ‘back-burner’ books, I actually made an exclusive shelf on my Goodreads called ‘back-burner’ where the books that I’m ‘currently reading but not currently reading’ will go.
It’s a neater organization system I think, than having eight books on my currently reading shelf. At least it eases my mind, pbtbt.
This is what I’m currently reading!
Heaven's Devils (StarCraft II, #1)
Heaven’s Devils by William C. Dietz – This is my currently audiobook. I’m listening to it for three reasons: It’s been on my tbr for literal years, it’s a 10 in 2020 book, and it fits the ‘Read a Media Tie-In Novel’ bingo square for Fantasy Bingo.
So far, it’s decent. I’ve read military sci-fi before and have enjoyed it, and this is no different. I’m not a huge fan about the characterization of like… any of the female characters in here though. They’re all very one dimensional and being used as nothing more than eye candy so far. But plot-wise, the story is decent. Depending on how bad the female rep gets, this book may go farther and farther down in rating.
This book tells the origin story of Jim Raynor, one of the main figures in the StarCraft universe. So far it’s pretty neat.
Interview with the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles, #1)
Interview With The Vampire by Anne Rice – This is a bit of a fail for me, that this book still isn’t finished. I picked this up in December to try to finish off my 10 in 2019 list and didn’t quite get there. And a month later I still haven’t finished it. This book, when I do get through it, will count for the ‘Read a book about a vampire’ square for Fantasy Bingo.
So far, I’m rather liking the book. It’s eerie and captivating and completely immersive. It’s so neat!
Pride and Prejudice
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen – This is a buddy read that I started in January with two of my buddies! This is my first time ever reading this story and while it started it just ok, I’ve just passed the half way point and have found myself really invested. I’m digging this so far, which is a surprise considering my track record with classics. Maybe this’ll be my gateway classic!
And that’s it! These are the books I’m actively currently reading. For anyone interested, here are all the books that are on the back-burner. I’ll get to them… eventually. Probably after Fantasy Bingo has ended, as all the ones there don’t count towards a square. I have like ten books to read towards the thing still, so it’s crunch time.
Happy reading!
GUESS WHO’S DUMB. It’s me. Apparently I’ve had the comments turned off on my posts for weeks and never noticed. No idea it was like that. But they’re on now. Please if you notice my comments off, poke me on IG or twitter and tell me because it’s 100% because I did it by accident and then went off in my own little world. :”D
Three more days, and I’m done with blogmas! After that I’ll be resuming a regular posting schedule, and currently I’m thinking it’ll be Saturday, Monday, Thursday. But we’ll see I suppose.
This is what I’m currently reading!
The Wolf (Under the Northern Sky, #1)
The Wolf by Leo Carew – I received this as a Christmas gift from my buddy Ashley! I didn’t get it ’til yesterday though, so that’s why it wasn’t in my December haul. But you know that photo thing that’s been going around on facebook? This one:
I’m not from Iceland, so I have no idea if this is actually a thing or not (if you’re an Icelander, please tell me) but me and Ashley thought it was neat so we kinda-sorta adopted it. I went to her house yesterday, we exchanged books, and we spent all day in her living room reading them. We were both busy Christmas eve so couldn’t do it then, but Saturday the 4th was still nice. We plan to keep up the tradition next year too!
Paradise Kiss: 20th Anniversary Edition
Paradise Kiss by Ai Yazawa – I picked this up a few days ago and I’m about half way through it. It’s over 850 pages! It’s pretty good so far though and I’m enjoying it.
Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3)
Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard – Third book, still reading it. I’ll get there, I’ll get there.
Caliban's War (The Expanse, #2)
Caliban’s War James S. A. Corey – I’ll finish this this month, dammit.
The Blood Mirror (Lightbringer, #4)
The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks – I’ll… I’ll get there. One day.
And that’s it! That’s what I’m reading!
Christmas Vacation TBR!
Blogmas 2019
Happy Friday! If you are reading this the morning it comes out, I’m currently at work, but today is my last work day of the year! I saved up six PTO days, and between them, holidays, and weekends, I’m getting twelve days off in a row and I’m so ready for it, man. I’M SO READY.
So I’m gonna celebrate by hopefully reading a lot. This is what I plan to read for the rest of the year:
Daughter of the Forest  (Sevenwaters, #1)
Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier – I’m buddy reading this, and should have it done by next weekend if all goes well. I’m about 3/4ths through it, and I’m really enjoying it.
Deathless (Leningrad Diptych, #1)
Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente – I’ve been in the middle of this book for a while, it just hasn’t been a focus recently, but I’m hoping to finish it as it’s a 10 in 2019 book.
Interview with the Vampire (The Vampire Chronicles, #1)
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice – In addition to fulfilling the ‘read a book about a vampire’ prompt in Fantasy Bingo, it’s also the last remaining 10 in 2019 book on my list, so if I get this one and the one above done, I’ll be happy.
Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3)
Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard – This is my current audio book, and it’d be nice to finish it honestly. I like it so far, I just haven’t focused on it recently.
Caliban's War (The Expanse, #2)
Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey – This is one of the many ‘I’ve been reading this forever’ books that I’d like to finish. Out of all the ones listed, this has the lowest priority, so I’ll get to it if I have time, but otherwise it’ll be a 2020 read.
And that’s it! Twelve days, five books. Doable? Maybe!
December Currently Reading! | ’19
Happy December! I’m switching today’s and tomorrow’s post around because I haven’t taken pictures of my books for this month yet. 😛 Cry.
This is what I’m currently reading!
Bloodwitch (The Witchlands, #3)
Bloodwitch by Susan Dennard – This is my current audio book, and I’m rather digging it. After the novella, which in my opinion dragged, this is nice change of pace.
Deathless (Leningrad Diptych, #1)
Deathless by Catherynne M Valente – I’m pretty sure this was on last month’s currently reading too… I’m still liking it, it’s just been a busy month and I haven’t had much time to sit down with it.
Caliban's War (The Expanse, #2)
Caliban’s War by James S. A. Corey – What reading I did do last month was in this book – I’m about half way through it now, and I’m really liking it. I hope to finish it soon!
The Blood Mirror (Lightbringer, #4)
The Blood Mirror by Brent Weeks – One day I’ll finish this book. ONE DAY.
And that’s it! So instead of this post tomorrow, tomorrow will be my November Book Haul. Happy reading!
