Bout of Books

Gueeeeeess who’s doing a readathon starting Monday! It’s-a me! πŸ˜€ This also means that my posts for this coming week will (hopefully) pick up a bit over the normal three-per-week.

I’ve participated in the Bout of Books readathon every time it has happened since BoB 11, so… a few years, at least. This time around, I’m working full-time, so most of my reading will actually be listening – audiobooks are your friend when you commute 15 hrs/week.

The readathon starts on Aug 21st and runs through Aug 27th. There will be challenges and all sorts of fun stuffs.

  • Listen to my audiobook(s) during every drive to/from work (10 drives)
  • Finish at least 3 books, one of them a physical copy

I might also pick up another audiobook if I finish the first one. Not sure what, though.

If you’re participating, let me know! πŸ˜€ If you’d like to participate, click the BoB Banner at the top! Happy reading!

Bout of Books 19 – Goals and TBR

Bout of Books

Hello, it’s Bout of Books time again! :”D I’ve been participating since…. Bout of Book 11 I think? So it’s been a few. I didn’t know this one was coming up at all until I saw Zezee’s post about it and had a mini spaz. So with it starting tomorrow, I’m totally participating.

For those unfamiliar, here is the blurb for the readathon:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, May 8th and runs through Sunday, May 14th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. There are challenges, giveaways, and a grand prize, but all of these are completely optional.Β For all Bout of Books 19 information and updates, be sure to visit theΒ Bout of BooksΒ blog.Β – From the Bout of Books team

This time around, the readathon is taking place between May 8th and May 14th, like the blurb says. Guess whose finals week that is?! Time’s up, it’s mine. :”D But! Guess who doesn’t have any finals this finals week?! Time’s up, it’s me! So I’ll be on campus working, but otherwise, I’ve got literally nothin’ going on – no assignments, no tests, nothing. So this readathon lines up perfectly with my schedule, yay!

Bout of Books Goals:

  • Read every day
  • Finish at least one novel (graphic novels dun count)
  • Participate in at least half of the challenges and make posts about them here

Bout of Books TBR:

  • A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J Maas – I’m currently about 25% through this one but haven’t picked it up in a few days. I’ll start Monday morning at whatever page I’m on then and just go from there.
  • The Broken Eye by Brent Weeks – Another huge book. I’m barely into this one. It’d be nice to finish, but we’ll see how it goes
  • Chew vol 1 by John Layman – This is the most recent graphic novel purchase for me and I think I can get through it pretty quickly πŸ˜€
  • Attack on Titan vols 12-14 by Hajime Isayama – These are the last three volumes that I physically own. There are 21 or 22 out currently, so I’ll need to pick up more eventually, but I want to read the ones I actually have first, hawhaw.

And that’s it! Let me know if you’re participating too! Happy reading!

Top 5 Wednesday: 2017 Goals

Top 5 Wednesday

Hello! It’s Wednesday again, the first Wednesday of the year! And since I’ve already completed a few different posts about goals, these ones will be different than the ones I’ve already mentioned. (Plus, reading other people’s goals posts gave me more ideas, so I want to do more anyways! :D)

T5W was created by Lainey and the group can be found here if you’d like to join!

5. Be more active in the blogging community

I’ve already started my progress towards this one. Last year, along with posting very sparingly, I didn’t really go through my post feed very much either. For everyone who commented or liked my posts and I didn’t return the favor, I’m very sorry. I’ll do better this year – you’ll see more of me on your blog.

This also includes better maintaining my social media accounts. If you’d like to add me on any of the following, do so!

Here is my goodreads account and my instagram account! Warning, I post pictures of my cat a lot. And my books, but mostly my cat.

4. Get in shape

I say this every year. Millions of people say this every year. But I really need to do it. It needs to happen. Currently I’m round. I’d like to be not round. :”D I started this resolution a bit before Christmas and am already seeing results, so I hope to keep it going.

To do this, I use MyFitnessPal ( <- Link if you’d like to add me) and have myself on a pretty decent calorie deficit. I’d also like to exercise more – I’m trying out a few different things and hopefully one of them will stick. Wish me luck. I’m gonna need it.

3. Prioritize books over the internet

I kinda mentioned this one in a past post, but not phrased so solidly. Basically, my life has become focuses on staring at glowing rectangles. Whether it be my phone, laptop, tablet or television, the damn rectangles tend to distract me from my books. I think it contributes a lot to how much reading I get done, or rather how much I don’t. I like reading, but I find myself procrastinating it and I can’t figure out why the hell it happens.

2. Get married

Yup, I’m getting married. My goal is to get everything organized in time to do so this year. We’re likely not having a wedding – just going to a JP and going on a honeymoon, but that alone is gonna take a lot of planning. I can’t imagine all the details a wedding would require. I found my person and I want to get this set up correctly so I can keep him.

1. Graduate college

This is the thing I want to do the most. If you haven’t followed my blog long (because I talk about this damn thing all the time) I’m currently in college for the second time. The first time, I got a bachelor’s in psychology. It kinda did nothing for me job-wise. So in 2014 I went back for computer science. I’ve seen gotten an internship that wants to hire me after graduation, which is way way better than my situation before. So now I just need to graduate. I supposedly do so in May – two more courses to go and then I’m free (again). If I do this and fail all else, I’ll still be happy with myself.

And that’s what I’d like to do in a nutshell. :”D I do hope you decide to add me on any of the things I’ve linked above – I do like having friendies.

Happy reading!

2017 Reading Goals

Hello! Time for the annual ‘Gonna try to do this’ post. I’ve done one of these every year since I started my blog towards the end of 2014 and every year I’m all optimistic about it. And then every year I inevitably fail about half the goals (woot). So here’s to another year of ‘Good Enough’. :”D

Seriously though, gonna really try to accomplish these, but I’m not gonna beat myself up about it.

Complete a Goodreads Reading Challenge of 50 Books

I did this last year and accomplished it as of two or three days ago. It’s definitely challenging for me, but doable. I dig it. (One year I did 110 books and achieved it – no idea how I did that. 50 is plenty good for me).

Count how many books I own and determine how many are not yet read

I do have a bit of help with this one – I have an ‘Owned’ shelf on goodreads, so I have an approximate number of the books I have. I just need to go through and make sure it’s up to date… and then I need to go through and determine which of those haven’t been read yet. I’m afraid, people. I’m afraid.

Maybe I’ll film the books as I go to motivate me. Bookshelf tour, yay. I NEED TO GET SOME DECENT LIGHTING.

Discard books I don’t like or lose interest in reading

This is a goal I had and achieved last year – it feels good to purge books that I have negative or no feelings for. It keeps my collection of books as something I’m happy to call part of me.

Read all of the books on my 17 in 2017 list

This sounds like an obvious one, but it’s never been a goal before for me. I’ve made these lists every year but I never made it a goal to actually complete them. Why, I don’t know. But I want to do it this year. I’m thinking I’ll put the names of the books in a jar and draw out one or two a month to read. (Except for Kiss of Deception, which I’ll be buddy reading with Acey)

So that’s it – these are my goals for the year. Hopefully, ideally, I will achieve all of them. We’ll see. 2017 is gonna be… it’s gonna be an interesting year. Yeesh.

January Wrap-Up and February Currently Reading

January was a very good reading month for me. I set my Goodreads goal for this year to 50 books, and this month, I’ve already read 11 of them. Woot. This was also a rather busy blogging month for me. I’m rather happy with the content I’ve managed to put out since the first of the month.

Overview of Blog Activity for the Month:

I also participated in two readathons this month, resulting in six additional posts:

Notice I didn’t do nearly as well in the RYBSAT this year. πŸ˜› There’s a reason, I promise. A dumb reason, but a reason.

Total posts for the month (including this post): 17

Reading Overview for January:

As said before, I completed 11 books. One graphic novel, six manga, one audiobook and three novels. They are as follows:

Locke & Key, Vol. 1 by Joe HillAddicted to You by Krista RitchieThe Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. MaasIs Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy KalingMadness, Volume 01 by Kairi ShimotsukiMadness, Volume 02 by Kairi ShimotsukiHeir of Fire by Sarah J. MaasSaiyuki Reload, Volume 8 by Kazuya MinekuraSaiyuki Reload, Volume 9 by Kazuya MinekuraWish, Vol. 01 by CLAMPWish, Vol. 02 by CLAMP

Locke & Key volume 1 by Joe Hill – 4 stars
I really liked this one. It was an interesting opening to a series I’m hoping to acquire the rest of very soon.

Addicted to You by Krista Ritchie – 2 stars
Didn’t care for this one at all. My review listed above explains my feelings more fully. But beh. I definitely missed what everyone was raving about for this one.

The Assassin’s Blade by Sarah J Maas – 4.5 stars
Really enjoyed this. This is the first book in the series where I didn’t find Celaena grating on my nerves (the whole time). I got to see why exactly she’s so cocky. Made me understand her a bit better and able to sympathize with her more than I had been.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? And Other Concerns by Mindy Kaling – 3 stars
This is the audiobook of the month, narrated by the author herself. This book I found alright. It was a pleasant, light read. But unfortunately it wasn’t much else.

Madness volumes 1 and 2 by Kairi Shimotsuki – 3 stars each
The premise of this book was really cool. Takes place in the future where humanity has kinda collapsed, leading to the rise of a wave of killers and assassins that have taken advantage of the chaos. They call themselves Madness. Like I said, cool premise. The characters were neat too, especially the different Madness members. The main arc of the story follows the leader of Madness who has been imprisoned and the young priest who watches over him in his cell. There’s a a bit of a love story here too, but it was portrayed in a very uh, interesting way. Not bad necessarily, but interesting. I’ll leave it there. If you’re interested in this series, just keep in mind it’s rated M, so expect content to warrant that rating. Overall, enjoyed this series. It was pretty decent.

Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas – 4.5 stars
This book made me a fan of the series. Before, I liked it. Definitely liked it, but this book made me want to say I’m a fan. There’s a difference. You get the difference, right? Please don’t tell me I’m just being goofy. Anyways, wrote a review on this one too, explaining thoughts more fully. But overall, really, really enjoyed it.

Saiyuki Reload volume 8 and 9 by Kazuya Minekura – 3.5 stars, 4 stars
This is a really, really good series, guys. Saiyuki Reload follows the original series, Saiyuki, picking up where that one left off and continuing to develop the characters beautifully. These latest two volumes were really good as well. I only have volume 10 of reload left, and I’ve finished the thing. BUT GUESS WHAT. The publishing company for this series folded right after volume 9 was published in English, so volume 10 was never translated. And since it was the last volume of the series, no other company wanted to pick it up for just one installment. I WILL NEVER READ IT. D: I’ve looked everywhere, online and otherwise, for a translation, a fan translation, anything. I even looked for German translations since I can kinda sorta speak and still, nada. IF YOU EVER SEE VOLUME 10 IN ENGLISH OR GERMAN ANYWHERE, TELL ME. SEND LINK, BUY IT AND MAIL IT TO ME. I’LL REIMBURSE YOU. AUAAAAUGUGUGAHAHGHHHH.

Wish volumes 1 and 2 by Clamp – 3 stars, 2.5 stars
I mentioned my feelings on this series earlier in my Top 5 Disappointing Eye Candies post, but I’ll do so again: I like this series, to a point. I kinda detached from it after a while though. Nothing stuck, nothing made me care. I likely won’t be finishing it. (But you never know, I could end up eating my words). Also, remember that ‘there’s a reason I did bad during the RYBSAT readathon’ thing? Well, this is it. This series I couldn’t finish, and it killed my motivation to move forward. :/ Like I said, a dumb reason, but a reason.

Favorite book of the month: Heir of Fire by Sarah J Maas
Least favorite book of the month: Addicted to You by Krista Ritchie

Progress on 2016 Reading Goals:

  • Read 11/50 books
  • Picked up books because of interest instead of hype: Yes. :”D
  • Put books together in one room: Not yet!
  • Books unhauled from disinterest or dislike: 12

Progress on Book Riot Read Harder/TBR Jar Challenge:

2016 Reading Resolutions

We’ve entered the dead days, so it’s time to gear up for the new year. I’m going to start with a list of reading goals I set for myself to hopefully follow. I did this last year as well, which will be gone over in a later post.

My 2016 goals are:

  • Read 50 books
  • Complete at least half of the Read Harder reading challenge (will post later about it)
  • Pick up books because they interest me, not just because they’re super hyped
  • Put all my books together – pull from my living room, my bedroom and my parents’ house. Need them to be together! In one room!
  • Get rid of books I disliked and/or will never reread again

I think those should be rather simple to follow. πŸ™‚ Wish me luck!

NaNoWriMo: Day 15.

Hello, in an hour it will be November 15th, 2015. So it’s time for the mid-way progress post. By midnight tomorrow night, if I’m on schedule I should be hitting 25,000 words.

Well, guess what.

I’m not on schedule.

I’m super behind schedule.

I’m sitting at just over 12,000 words.

So I’m 12,000 words behind schedule.

WOE IS ME. But on the plus side, I really like my story this time around. If you haven’t read my previous posts on the subject, I’m re-writing the nano novel I wrote in 2012. I’ve completely revamped it. So I’m liking it. :”D

Of course I’m just spouting excuses, but my class load has been heavy this month. I’ve had two exams already and I have two more within the next two weeks. And I have three upcoming presentations, all due the first week of December, so that’s gonna go over well. Odds are at this point, I won’t finish on time. But at the same time, I feel like this is a story I’ll want to continue afterwards. I hope. If all goes according to plan, Thanksgiving break will be a good time for me to try to catch up. Ideally, I’ll have all my presentation stuff completed before break so I won’t need to work on it then. But if there’s one thing I’m awesome at, it’s procrastination.

Also! I found out one of my friends is also doing Nano, so I’m going to go visit her the day before Thanksgiving and we’re gonna have an all-day write-in together :”D My hope for that day is a good word count and lots of pizza and wine.

So that’s it. Prolly not gonna win, but definitely having a good time writing the thing! If you guys are going to edit your novel in December, let me know~ I’d love to be a beta reader and get one in return.

Happy writing!
