OWLs Magical Readathon is finished! | April Wrap Up

hpbanner

Hello! This April, I was participating in the OWLs portion of the Magical Readathon. I made my announcement post about it towards the end of the March, where I decided I was going to go after the career of Magizoologist and complete the Dragon Tamer training.

Well, in both of those I succeeded. So what I’m gonna do is go over my OWLs books first, then I will go over the rest of what I read in April. So if you’re only interested in the first bit, there will be a nice bold header to let you know you’ve made it to the end of the good bit.

Magizoologist Prompts

Care of Magical Creatures: Hippogriffs – creature with a beak on the cover

Charms: Lumos Maxima – white cover

Herbology: Mimbulus Mimbletonia – title starts with M

Potions: Shrinking Solution – book under 150 pages

Dragon Tamer Training: A book containing dragons

OWLs Books

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson – Care of Magical Creatures – This book went the same way for me that a lot of young adult fantasy romance books do: That I liked it well enough for what it was, but I didn’t love it. Now, this isn’t me knocking ya: there are a ton of books that I do love, but recently this has been the pattern. What I did love though was the whimsical way that the author wrote. I definitely wanna pick up her newer book because of this. 3.75 stars

Pandora Hearts vol 1 by Jun Mochizuki – Charms – This one really through me for a loop. For some reason – whether by the name or the cover – I thought it was a romance. It was not a romance. Honestly it’s more of a fantasy horror. That surprising genre aside, I did end up really liking this one. It deals with a realm that’s… almost like an underworld but not quite. It’s really cool, and I definitely plan on continuing this one as soon as I can get a hold of more issues. 4 stars

Model vol 1 by Lee So-Young – Herbology – This was technically a re-read for me, but the last time I read it was about 2006, so it was basically brand new. This follows a young woman when her friend brings someone from a bar to her house, passed out drunk, and leaves him there in her care. While he’s sleeping, she notices his beauty and decides to paint his portrait. Well, turns out he’s a vampire. I gotta tell ya, this came out in the height of the vampire romance genre trope and it falls pretty heavily into it. It was still enjoyable enough though for what it was, and with a dose of nostalgia added in, I found myself liking it. 3 stars

I Hate Fairyland vol 1 by Skottie Young – Potions – This one unfortunately was a bit of a let down. I picked this up due to the hype, which was mistake number one. It’s about a young girl who gets trapped in Fairy Land… and then never gets out. Forty years later, she has the mind of a grumpy adult and the body of an eight year old. This is supposed to be a comedy – brutal, gory, and full of bubble gum and rainbows. But personally I found it kinda too boring. But hey, I could see why someone would like it. Just not for me. I didn’t hate it though, I was rather neutral. 3 stars

A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent by Marie BrennanDragon Tamer Training – This was definitely a favorite of the month. I think I like it even more now in retrospect than I did while reading it, and I really, really enjoyed reading it. This book is a fictional memoir of a woman in the fantasy-equivalent of Victorian England who sets off on a journey to research dragons in a far away land. Honestly it felt like Elizabeth Bennet was climbing into caves and exploring ruins. It had a smart sense of humor and the narrator at the time of writing her memoir is in her 70s, so the story she’s telling from when she’s 19 is full of witticisms and retrospect. It was really well written and really entertaining, and I’m definitely gonna pick up the second one. 4.5 stars

And that’s it for OWLs! I succeeded in completing all the prompts, and so I’ll continue with Magizoologist in August for the NEWTs. Lemme know how you did!

April Wrap Up

So in addition to the five books and manga mentioned above, I read thirty-five more things! 33 were manga, 2 were books. Can you tell I’m still deep into my manga kick? Can you?

LDK Vol. 1

LDK vols 1-9 by Ayu Watanabe – I picked this series up on Kindle Unlimited (I have a free trial version for now, so I’m taking advantage of it) and honestly it was pretty entertaining for a while, but I kinda just… lost interest. By the time volume nine rolled around, this manga was neck-deep in your standard tropes and dramas. And I’m not saying that was bad necessarily, because I definitely get into the mood for manga like that, but at my time of reading it really just wasn’t doing it for me. It was fun while it last though. I might continue it again in the future, who knows. 3-3.5 stars each

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet (Wayfarers, #1)

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers – I picked this up on audio originally to be a Fantasy Bingo 2019-2020 book, but I didn’t finish it in time. So now it’s gonna be a Fantasy Bingo 2020-2021 book. I ended up rather liking this. The characterization was really neat and while nothing really happened lots of things were happening. This book really was a lot of small plot points instead of a big goal overarching. It was pleasant and nice, but I gotta tell ya, I have about zero motivation to pick up the next one. Why? Who knows. 4 stars

Mars, Vol. 1

Mars vols 1-4 by Fuyumi Soryo – This one went the same way as LDK did. I kinda just got bored with it. I remember picking up the first volume in high school and liking it, but I couldn’t remember what it was about. So I plucked the first handful of volumes off Kindle and gave them a try. Well, turned out to be a dramatic romance. And I must reiterate: I do like those normally. I don’t know what it was about this, but by volume four I really didn’t care to pick up volume five. It was alright while it lasted though. 3-4 stars each

Waiting for Spring 1 (Waiting for Spring, #1)

Waiting for Spring vol 1 by Anashin – I realize I just complained about two romances right before this, but this is a romance and I really liked it. So much so that I’ve ordered the first four volumes physically and they’re on their way here now! They’ll be part of next month’s haul. This manga follows a girl who ends up becoming friends with the members of the basketball team at her school. Awkward teenage feels ensue, yada yada. But I liked this one and am gonna keep going. Maybe it was the execution that made this one different? Who knows. 4 stars

The Heroic Legend of Arslan, Vol. 1

The Heroic Legend of Arslan vols 1-2 by Hiromu Arakawa – Do you recognize the author name? This is the same person who wrote the all-mighty Fullmetal Alchemist! This is a fantasy following a prince to a kingdom on the brink of war. While his father is ruthless and loves the glory of battle, Arslan is gentle and thoughtful and doesn’t like to fight. This series had a slow, but solid beginning, but volume two really picked up and made me want to continue, so I will! 3.5 and 4 stars

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid – I think I was in a weird reading mood this month. This one’s a bit outside my norm, but the hype made me pick it up when I saw it on Scribd, so. This book is a story about a woman who had seven husbands, her rise to fame, and what happened to get her there. It was alright. I knew going into it that I likely wasn’t going to super love it, but I did end up enjoying it for the most part. So for someone who doesn’t typically read this genre, I thought the book was pretty solid, and I can see how someone who does read this genre would be bonkers for this book. 3.75 stars

Black Butler, Vol. 28 (Black Butler, #28)

Black Butler vols 12-28 by Yana Toboso – So last month I read vols 1-11 and I basically raved about how much I was loving it. Well, this month I caught up to where the series is currently at (vol 29 comes out in August) and guys, I am smitten.

The manga is set in 1889 England, and, well, here’s the goodreads synopsis because I’m crap at this:

In the Victorian ages of London The Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel Phantomhive, needs to get his revenge on those who had humiliated him and destroyed what he loved. Not being able to do it alone he sells his soul to a demon he names Sebastian Michaelis. Now working as his butler, Sebastian must help the Earl Phantomhive in this suspenseful, exciting, thriller manga.

And honestly that synopsis doesn’t do it justice. It’s so much more than that. Black Butler has quickly become one of my all-time favorite manga. Like, I’m talking in my top 3 ever. Ever. It’s just so good. It’s well written, it’s funny, it’s suspenseful, it’s mysterious, it’s action-packed, it’s occasionally absurd, and it’s everything I want in a manga.

The currently plot arch around the last few volumes has me absolutely reeling and I am pining for volume 29 so much. Honestly I might even reread the entire series to keep the edge off in the meantime. Augh I can’t get over this series. And as of yesterday, I lent all twenty eight volumes to my sister so she can read it so I have someone to talk to about it. I need to talk about the plot twist, augh. And nobody I know has caught up yet. So I’m forcing my sister to commiserate with me. She’s gonna send me live-reactions as she reads and I’m so ready for it. I do have to say though, while the manga is fantastic, I don’t think the anime is on the same caliber. For some reason the anime is mostly filler. It’s not bad, it’s good, but if you watch the anime and go ‘why in the world does she love this so much’ it’s because you’re missing the point. Most of the manga plot doesn’t actually show up in the anime. Just. Sayin’.

Anyways, I love this series. The last I think four volumes were all five stars, and leading up to it, there were a few more dotted in there. I’m so ready for volume 29.

4-5 stars each

Other Stuff

  • I’ve jumped on the baking bandwagon. Cooking, too. This month, I made coffee cake, loaded potato soup, a million tacos, and today I’m gonna take a crack at a slow-cooker brownie cookie. I even bought yeast, dammit.
  • I started playing Breath of the Wild again, and man am I loving it.

Reading Goals

  • Read 50 books – 94/100
  • Maintain a consistent posting schedule
    January – Fail
    February – Pass
    March – Pass
    April – Pass
  • Keep track of reading statistics – In progress
  • Reduce physical TBR to 200 – 236

And that’s it! April was a tiring month despite me not really doing anything. It was weird. If you’ve read any of the above, lemme know! Happy reading!

OWLs Magical Readathon 2020 TBR!

hpbanner

It has come again! The OWLs for the Magical Readathon start April 1st, and I’m pumped about it. If you’ve noticed, I kinda fell off of doing readathons lately. This one is too much fun to not do, though.

For the full info on how the readathon works, please watch the announcement video:

So I’m not going into all the details on how this thing works, that’s what the video is for. What I am going to do is going into my chosen career and my TBR for it.

Last year, I chose Alchemist, which was crazy, as it was the most challenging career out of all available at the time, and surprisingly, I achieved all the requirements for it, both in the OWLs and the NEWTs. This year though I’m going for an easier one, because I’m also planning on participating in Camp Nanowrimo in April so I need to be able to balance.

This year, I’m going to go with

Magizoologist

Magizoologist

Magizoologist focuses on working with neato animals, and it has four OWL prompts, so I figured it was totally doable. In addition to my career, I’ve picked up an extra training that only Magizoologists can do!

Dragon Tamer Training

dragon tamer series

This training adds one additional prompt to my TBR, so that’ll be five total. I plan to read manga for as many as I can to make it easier on myself: I really plan to dive into Nano with full force.

So my prompts for the OWLs are:

Care of Magical Creatures: Hippogriffs – creature with a beak on the cover

Charms: Lumos Maxima – white cover

Herbology: Mimbulus Mimbletonia – title starts with M

Potions: Shrinking Solution – book under 150 pages

Dragon Tamer Training: A book containing dragons

And my TBR to fulfill these prompts is:

I Hate Fairyland vol 1 by Skottie Young – This books is under 150 pages, so it’ll fulfill my Potions prompt!

Pandora Hearts vol 1 by Jun Mochizuki – White cover, Charms!

Model vol 1 by Lee So-Young – Starts with M so it fulfills my Herbology prompt!

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan – I’ve owned this one for ages and am pumped to be picking it up. And considering it’s literally about a woman studying dragons, it’ll be perfect for my Dragon Tamer Training!

An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson – It has a raven on the front, aka a beak-ed creature, so it fulfills my Care of Magical Creatures prompt!

None of these books are super long. The dragon book is by far the longest, and it’s only 330-something pages. So with these two books, two manga and one graphic novel, I feel like I can finish both the OWLs readathon and my Camp Nanowrimo project, which I’ll post about later on.

Let me know if you’re participating. Happy reading!

N.E.W.T.s Magical Readathon Wrap Up! | August Wrap Up

hpbanner

Happy end-of-newts!

This year, I was going for Alchemist, which was the most challenging of the careers. I figured, even if I didn’t get it, I’d likely qualify for some other career. But go me – I did it! I read seventeen things this month, qualifying me for Alchemist!

My original TBR was a bit lofty, in retrospect. I did complete 17 books that filled the prompts I needed, but I ended up having to swap out a lot of my original TBR for other books when I ran into the time crunch. I finished my last one as of 10 minutes ago, and it’s about 9am on Aug 31st as I’m writing this, so I finished with about 15 hours to spare!

This is what I needed for Alchemist:

And this is what I read:

Ancient Runes

  • A: Read a book recommended by a friend

Saga, Vol. 9 (Saga, #9)

Saga vol 9 by Brian K Vaughan – This ended up being super great, and man did it break my heart. I’m now full caught up on this series and I’m eagerly awaiting the next one. Come back from hiatus, please ;~:

4.5 stars

  • E: Book written in past tense

Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1)

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones – It was really neat getting to see the source material for a movie I love so much. I actually ended up re-watching the movie as well when I finished this. It was a good time!

3.5 stars

  • O: Book that has been on your TBR for ages

Bitch Planet, Vol. 1: Extraordinary Machine

Bitch Planet vol 1 by Kelly Sue DeConnick – This ended up being really interesting and I’m planning on continuing. The art was different, and so was the plot. It’s definitely gotten mixed reviews and I can see why, but I ended up rather enjoying this!

3.5 stars

Arithmancy

  • A: Book that ends on an even page number

Chew, Vol. 3: Just Desserts

Chew vol 3 by John Layman – This series is such a joy. I really liked this one.

4 stars

  • E: Read a stand alone

Nod

Nod by Adrian Barnes – Now this one, this one was a really interesting read. Don’t pick it up if you don’t like hanging questions, as the author unfortunately passed away before he could write another book in the series, but for what it is, it’s really good. It follows a man in a world that can no longer sleep, and he being one of the handful who still can, has to watch the world crumble around him. Really, this was good. I really liked it.

4 stars

  • O: Books that’s longer than 350 pages

The Legend of Zelda: Legendary Edition, Vol. 2: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages

You by Caroline KepnesThe Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages by Akira Himekawa – This is one of the books I had to swap out. I simply just didn’t have enough time. This is the second book in the Legend of Zelda series, but note they’re all companions, not direct sequels. Each follows a different Zelda game. I ended up rather enjoying this, and I feel like part of it was due to the fact that I’ve never played the oracle games, so I wasn’t constantly comparing them. This was good though!

3.75 stars

Herbology

  • A: Audiobook

Windwitch (The Witchlands, #2)

Windwitch by Susan Dennard – Originally I had left this prompt open, as I tend to pick up audios randomly. So this is the one I ended up using. Just like the first book in the series, I really enjoyed this. I’ve been itching to start Bloodwitch, which I’ll do after I read the novella.

4 stars

  • E: Book between 350-390 pages

The Legend of Zelda: Legendary Edition, Vol. 1: Ocarina of Time Parts 1 & 2

Me Before You by Jojo MoyesThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time by Akira Himekawa – This was another swap-out. This one is the first in the series I mentioned, and while it’s my favorite Zelda game, I liked this graphic novel less than the other one I read, namely because I couldn’t help but compare it to the game as I read. It was good, but my mind wouldn’t let me love it.

3 stars

  • O: Book with a flower on the cover

The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, A Rún, Volume 1 (The Girl from the Other Side, #1)

The Girl From the Other Side vol 1 by Nagabe – This first volume was a tad slow, but the ending was interesting enough that I plan to continue it. I feel like it could become a favorite series. It definitely has the potential

4 stars

Potions

  • Read your friend’s favorite book

Dorohedoro, Vol. 1

Dorohedoro vol 1 by Q. Hayashida – This is among one of my best buddy’s manga series. She lent it to me ages ago and I figured now was the best time to pick it up. I think I read it back in high school sometime too and remember really liking it. This time around though, it was alright.

3 stars

  • Book with cover in Hogwart’s house color

Chew, Vol. 4: Flambé

Chew vol 4 by John Layman – Again, this series is great. Gonna hopefully get volume 5 soon!

3.5 stars

  • Book that starts with a prologue

The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1)

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh – I have so many feelings about this. Parts of it I really liked, other parts I really didn’t. At some point if I get off my ass, I’ll write a review about it.

3 stars

Transfiguration

  • Read a book the LGBT+ representation

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare – I did like this book a bit more than the previous book. Liked it enough to get me invested, so I plan on picking up the third one at some point here.

3.5 stars

  • Read a sequel

Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 3

Delicious in Dungeon vol 3 by Ryoko Kui – This was super cute, as I had predicted. I have volume four all ready and waiting too!

3.5 stars

  • Read a book over 500 pages

Wolf Children: Ame & Yuki

Empire of Storms by Sarah J MaasWolf Children: Ame & Yuki by Mamoru Hosoda – This is my final swap out. At 500 pages, I don’t know what I was thinking, originally choosing a novel. This graphic novel though flew – I think I read it in an hour. It was really good and really cute. I enjoyed it.

3.5 stars

Astronomy

  • A: Moon on cover/title

The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2.5)

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss – I ended up liking this more than I liked The Wise Man’s Fear honestly. Mostly because the lack of Kvothe. If you’re looking for action or adventure, this is not the book for you. But it’s quaint, and I liked it.

3.5 stars

  • E: Night in title/series name

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon – This almost ended up being a new favorite of mine. I still really enjoyed it, but giving it a 5 at the end (which I reserve for ‘new all-time favorites’) felt a bit wrong. But don’t let that dissuade you from reading it. I still really, really enjoyed this book. It was great! My husband had been after me to read it for a while and I’m glad I finally did.

4 stars

And that’s it – 17 books up, 17 down. I finished. And now I have the rest of the day to read whatever I want until the next readathon (Space Opera September) starts tomorrow.

If you participated in the Magical Readathon, lemme know how you did!

N.E.W.T.s Magical Readathon TBR!

hpbanner

Hi! Part two of the magical readathon is here! It starts August 1st and runs the whole month! If you missed out on part 1, check out the original announcement video by the host! Also if you’re curious about this one, check out the announcement video for it as well!

Back in April, I had chosen Alchemist as my wizarding career. I succeeded in getting the O.W.L.s needed for it! So I’m going to continue on with that path and try to get my N.E.W.T.s for it as well:

So for an O in five subjects and an E in one, that means I need to read 17 books. Holy. Poop.

I’m going to say now that I’m going to be out on town August 1-6th as a combined birthday-wedding anniversary trip. So that week honestly my reading will be minimal. I tell myself every time I go somewhere that I’ll read so much during down time and I just… don’t. So I’m acknowledging that now and planning on reading a lot of manga and graphic novels to hopefully still achieve my reading goal.

Ancient Runes

  • A: Read a book recommended by a friend

Saga vol 9 by Brian K Vaughan – I’ve had this volume for a few months now and haven’t picked it up. One of my buddies has told me to a few times now, so it counts, woo!

Saga, Vol. 9 (Saga, #9)

  • E: Book written in past tense

Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones – I’ve had this for ages, and it’s on my 10 in 2019 list, so perfect!

Howl's Moving Castle (Howl's Moving Castle, #1)

  • O: Book that has been on your TBR for ages

Bitch Planet vol 1 by Kelly Sue DeConnick – I can’t tell you when I bought this one. At least a year ago!

Bitch Planet, Vol. 1: Extraordinary Machine

Arithmancy

  • A: Book that ends on an even page number

Chew vol 3 by John Layman – at 128 pages, this fits

Chew, Vol. 3: Just Desserts

  • E: Read a stand alone

Nod by Adrian Barnes – I feel like this was originally meant to be a series, but unfortunately the author passed away before more was published. So it’s a stand alone as far as I know.

Nod

  • O: Books that’s longer than 350 pages

You by Caroline Kepnes – If I’m gonna read a larger book, it should probably be a thriller or a YA fantasy so I blow through it. This is the former!

You

Herbology

  • A: Audiobook

I’m not gonna pick a specific book for this, because I listen to 2-3 audiobooks per month as it is. Therefore I’ll just use whatever I happen to pick up.

  • E: Book between 350-390 pages

Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – My edition is around 370 pages and I’m hoping I can buzz through it

Me Before You (Me Before You, #1)

  • O: Book with a flower on the cover

So unbeknownst to you, I just spend the past 20 minutes looking at all my book covers and not a single one has a flower on it. But, luckily my friend lent me some manga, and one of those has a flower. The Girl From the Other Side vol 1 by Nagabe!

The Girl from the Other Side: Siúil, A Rún, Volume 1 (The Girl from the Other Side, #1)

Potions

  • Read your friend’s favorite book

Dorohedoro vol 1 by Q. Hayashida – This is from the same friend that lent me the above manga. She’s been after me to read it for ages, so here we are.

Dorohedoro, Vol. 1

  • Book with cover in Hogwart’s house color

Chew vol 4 by John Layman – It’s not quite the right shade of blue, but it’s still blue.

Chew, Vol. 4: Flambé

  • Book that starts with a prologue

The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh – This is a YA fantasy with a mystery-thriller-esque plot, I think? So hopefully I can get through it quickly.

The Wrath and the Dawn (The Wrath and the Dawn, #1)

Transfiguration

  • Read a book the LGBT+ representation

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare – I’m fairly sure there’s a gay character in here, at least one, maybe more? I’m not positive. If it turns out I’m wrong, I’ll read another.

City of Ashes (The Mortal Instruments, #2)

  • Read a sequel

Delicious in Dungeon vol 3 by Ryoko Kui – “vol 3”

Delicious in Dungeon, Vol. 3

  • Read a book over 500 pages

Man, this prompt is mean. I’m going with Empire of Storms by Sarah J Maas because I have a history of being able to fly through her books. Hoping this one will be the same way.

Empire of Storms (Throne of Glass, #5)

Astronomy

  • A: Moon on cover/title

The Slow Regard of Silent Things by Patrick Rothfuss – This is literally the only book I could find with a moon. And I am fairly interested in it! I’ve borrowed this from a friend.

The Slow Regard of Silent Things (The Kingkiller Chronicle, #2.5)

  • E: Night in title/series name

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon – This comes highly recommended to me by my husband, so I’m rather pumped for it.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

And that’s it! Minus the audiobook which I have yet to pick, here is the complete stack of what I’m gonna be reading next month:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D_cVyXpXYAEZrz3.jpg

Lemme know if you feel like you’ll fall into an early grave from all this reading like I will. Happy reading!

OWLs Magical Readathon | April Wrap Up

hpbanner

Hello, Happy May! Today I’m going to go over my results of the OWLs Magical Readathon! And then I’ll cover everything else usually in one of my wrap ups.

OWLs Readathon

Firstly, if you’re unfamiliar with the OWLs readathon and would like to know more, check out the announcement video here.

So, I mentioned in my original announcement post that I was going for Alchemist. That meant I had to complete all twelve OWLs. During my mid-month check-in I had completed about three of them. With nine left on the fifteenth of the month, it was gonna be a bit of a challenge.

But, I did it! I completed all twelve OWLs!

Ancient Runes: Retelling

The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1)

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – Finished! I really liked this one, and gave it a full length blabber.

Arithmancy: Work written by more than one author

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Finished! Going into this one, the hype kinda daunted me. I did not really expect to like it nearly as much as I did. But man, I was captivated. Seriously enjoyed it.

Astronomy: “Star” in the title

StarCraft: Frontline, Volume 1 (Starcaft)

StarCraft: Frontline vol 1 by Richard A. Knaak – Finished! Unfortunately this wasn’t my cup of tea. I couldn’t tell if I wasn’t in the mood for it or if the story just failed to grasp me at all. I played StarCraft a lot when I was a teen, so I know the lore and stuff, so it’s not like I didn’t have context. Just… wasn’t for me, I guess.

2 stars

Care of Magical Creatures: Land animal on the cover

Fruits Basket, Vol. 1

The Meowmorphosis by Coleridge Cook and Franz Kafka – Abandoned
Fruits Basket
vol 1 by Natsuki Takaya – Finished! I realized on April 29th that I wouldn’t have time for another novel. So I subbed this category out for a manga. It was my saving grace, I wouldn’t have completed the challenge without it. I read Fruits Basket back when I was a teenager and I’ve been slowly collecting copies second hand. I had been meaning to reread it, so getting the chance to start was really nice.

4 stars

Charms: Age-line, an adult work

League of Dragons (Temeraire, #9)

League of Dragons by Naomi Novik – Finished! I picked this up on audiobook and finishing it felt like the end of an era. This is the ninth and final book in the Temeraire series, and now I don’t know what to do with myself.

4.5 stars

Defense Against the Dark Arts: Reducto – title starts with ‘R’

Rave Master, Vol. 01

Rave Master vol 1 by Hiro Mashima – Finished! It was so great rereading this. I read it back in high school and haven’t touched it in about a decade. I’m so glad that I picked it up though – the humor still gets me, ahaha.

4 stars

Divination: Set in the future

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Finished! This one I ended up liking about as much as I expected. I figured that I would like it, but not love it, and that’s exactly what happened. It’s intrigued me enough to pick up the second book in the series, so maybe I’ll do that in June or something.

3.5 stars

Herbology: Plant on the cover

Attack on Titan, Vol. 17

Attack on Titan vol 17 by Hajime Isayama – Finished! This manga was the last thing I completed for OWLs. I finished it with two hours to spare – 10pm April 30th. Man, I forgot how much I liked this series. I have volume 18 lined up for May, so hopefully I’ll be able to like, actually remember stuff better between volumes this time. I’m thinking a reread might be necessary soon.

History of Magic: Published at least ten years ago

Case Closed, Vol. 2

Case Closed vol 2 by Gosho Aoyama – Finished! This series gives me major nostalgia. I wanna say I’ll collect them all but to my knowledge, the series isn’t finished yet. There’s like 60 volumes or something. Ahaha. Nevertheless, I really liked this.

4 stars

Muggle studies: Contemporary

Fangirl

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – Finished! I wrote a review for this one, which went up earlier this month. Thought it was pretty decent!

3 stars

Potions: Next ingredient – sequel

Case Closed, Vol. 3

Case Closed vol 3 by Gosho Aoyama – Finished! I enjoyed this volume just as much as the previous one. With this, I’ve read all I own. So maybe I’ll get more, if I see them second hand. Who knows. But as mentioned above, it’s definitely not going to be something I actively do. Just too many, man.

4 stars

Transfiguration: Sprayed edges or red cover

Dark Matter

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch – Finished! I seriously enjoyed this one. I wrote a mini blabber on it as well. I know Black Crouch has more books out and coming out, and it’s made me wanna read them.

4 stars

And that’s it for the OWLs! Since I got all twelve, I can go after Alchemist (or anything else I choose) in the NEWTs and August. I really enjoyed this readathon, it definitely kept me motivated to read. I can’t wait for part two!

Books

Aside from the twelve OWLs books, I did complete one additional book:

Fool's Assassin (The Fitz and the Fool, #1)

Fool’s Assassin by Robin Hobb. Man, this series is to the point where it gives me nostalgia, and I haven’t even finished reading it yet! I really liked this opening book to the final trilogy, though I’m absolutely sure it’s going to end up tearing my heart to pieces. As is the norm, I buddy-read this with Zezee, who also liked it. We’ll be picking up book two in June, and then the third and final book sometime after that. And then, I’ll need to find something to fill the void.

4.5 stars

Other Things

  • Something neat is in the works. I’m not quite ready to say what yet, but the prep is coming along nicely. I’ll actually say what it is soon. But man I’m so pumped and had to at least give a tease. 😀

O.W.L.s Magical Readathon |Mid-month check-in

hpbanner

Hello, it’s about half way through April now (damn space time continuum, etc) and I wanted to look at my OWLs goals and where I am.

If you’re unfamiliar, here is the announcement video of the OWLs Readathon, which take place from April 1st through the 30th. Basically, you pass the month reading books to fit prompts, and each you complete counts as an OWL examination you take and pass at Hogwarts. After April is over, there will be another readathon in August for the NEWTs, and the end goal is to plan your reading to get the right OWLs/NEWTs to get a wizarding career.

In the announcement post I made back at the end of last month, I announced I was going to try for Alchemist, and do a backup of really any other career should I fail it. The Alchemist requires all twelve possible OWLs. This is my progress so far:

Ancient Runes: Retelling

The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1)

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – In progress. I’m about half way through this book so far, and while it took me a bit to get into, I’m rather liking it now.

Arithmancy: Work written by more than one author

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – Not started.

Astronomy: “Star” in the title

StarCraft: Frontline, Volume 1 (Starcaft)

StarCraft: Frontline vol 1 by Richard A. Knaak – Not started.

Care of Magical Creatures: Land animal on the cover

The Meowmorphosis

The Meowmorphosis by Coleridge Cook and Franz Kafka – Not started.

Charms: Age-line, an adult work

Not started. I mentioned that I was going to leave this open and just fill it in with a book when I came to it, because I owned so many that fit. I still have no idea what I wanna do for this one.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: Reducto – title starts with ‘R’

Rave Master, Vol. 01

Rave Master vol 1 by Hiro Mashima – Not started.

Divination: Set in the future

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Not started.

Herbology: Plant on the cover

Attack on Titan, Vol. 17

Attack on Titan vol 17 by Hajime Isayama – Not started.

History of Magic: Published at least ten years ago

Case Closed, Vol. 2

Case Closed vol 2 by Gosho Aoyama – Not started.

Muggle studies: Contemporary

Fangirl

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – Finished. I wrote a review for this one, which went up yesterday. Thought it was pretty decent. 3/5 stars

Potions: Next ingredient – sequel

Case Closed, Vol. 3

Case Closed vol 3 by Gosho Aoyama – Not started.

Transfiguration: Sprayed edges or red cover

Dark Matter

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch – Finished. 4/5 stars. A review of this one will be up soon… maybe?

So.. as you can see, I’ve finished two out of twelve OWLs half way through the month. But also notice that five of the ten remaining are manga. All those manga, I plan on reading on April 30th, and instead I’ll use the month leading up to it focusing on the actual books. So the stats are gonna look skewed in the mean time. Granted I still am a tad behind. I should probably have The Bear and the Nightingale done at this point, but as mentioned above, it was a bit slow, so it slowed me down. -_-

At this point, I don’t feel like my goal is unattainable. I feel like I can still get all twelve OWLs, so wish me luck in doing so! If you’re participating in the OWLs Readathon, lemme know how you’re doing!

O.W.L.s Magical Readathon | Participation and TBR

hpbanner

Hello, today I’m announcing my participation on the OWLs round of the Magical Readathon!

The Magical Readathon is a two-part Harry Potter themed readathon. The first part, the OWLs, will take place April 1st through the 30th. The second part, the NEWTs, will happen in August later this year.

During the month of April, I will be sitting my OWL exams by reading books to fulfill different prompts. And then in August, I’ll be honing my passed OWL topics for the NEWT exams – more prompts, etc. Throughout the whole thing, I will be trying to achieve the goal of getting a wizard career!

From this point onward, I’m going to go into what I’m doing specifically. If you’d like to learn more about the process to participate or if you’d like to join, here is the announcement video explaining everything in detail! The video links the prompts and careers and all the info like that.

So, looking at the careers, I think I’m going to try to go all-out. I’m gonna go for Alchemist. It requires the most reading to complete, so I’m gonna be nuts and try to get it. I figure, even if I fail, I’ll likely achieve a different career along the way.

From the career brochure, the Alchemist description is the following:

So… all twelve OWL topics offered are needed for Alchemist. So I’m going to make a TBR for all twelve topics – the prompts can be found on the OWL Prompts list.

My tentative TBR is as follows:

Ancient Runes: Retelling

The Bear and the Nightingale (Winternight Trilogy, #1)

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden – This book is a retelling of a Russian Folktale (though don’t ask me which one) and it’s on my 10 in 2019 list, so it’s the perfect time to jump into it.

Arithmancy: Work written by more than one author

Illuminae (The Illuminae Files, #1)

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff – I’ve had this book for ages. I’ve been waiting for the hype to die down a bit. I’m not sure how I’m gonna like this one, honestly. I hope I love it!

Astronomy: “Star” in the title

StarCraft: Frontline, Volume 1 (Starcaft)

StarCraft: Frontline vol 1 by Richard A. Knaak. A manga for this one, because I want reading twelve things in one month to be, you know, actually feasible. This is the only book I own already that has ‘Star’ in the title, so this is it, man.

Care of Magical Creatures: Land animal on the cover

The Meowmorphosis

The Meowmorphosis by Coleridge Cook and Franz Kafka – This could potentially end up being my retelling one if I don’t get to Bear and the Nightingale, but this book is a retelling of Metamorphosis by Kafka, but the main character wakes up one day to find he turned into a kitten. Should be nice and weird.

Charms: Age-line, an adult work

This… I’m going to leave this open. The majority of what I read is adult fantasy, so I’m just going to plug in a book I end up reading during the month and call it a closed deal.

Defense Against the Dark Arts: Reducto – title starts with ‘R’

Rave Master, Vol. 01

Rave Master vol 1 by Hiro Mashima – Technically a reread, but I’ve acquired some new volumes of this series within the past year recently and it’s been years since I’ve touched the series, so I want to start again at the beginning.

Divination: Set in the future

Cinder (The Lunar Chronicles, #1)

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – Now, I think this is set in the future, because it mentions a ‘New Beijing’ as a city, but it doesn’t mention a date, at least not in the synopsis. So if this isn’t set in the future, do tell me.

Herbology: Plant on the cover

Attack on Titan, Vol. 17

Attack on Titan vol 17 by Hajime Isayama – There is grass on the cover. Pbtbt.

History of Magic: Published at least ten years ago

Case Closed, Vol. 2

Case Closed vol 2 by Gosho Aoyama – Published in 2004! I’m going to ignore that 2004 was 15 years ago. Ugh.

Muggle studies: Contemporary

Fangirl

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell – Another one that I’ve been waiting for the hype to die down on. I’ve never read a Rowell book, and usually I’m not a huge fan of contemporary. I’m hoping this can prove to be a really good one, though.

Potions: Next ingredient – sequel

Case Closed, Vol. 3

Case Closed vol 3 by Gosho Aoyama – Reading this volume will have me up to all the ones I currently own. I read vol 1 forever go, bought two and three, and then never read them. Time to strike them off the TBR.

Transfiguration: Sprayed edges or red cover

Dark Matter

Dark Matter by Blake Crouch – I mentioned recently that this book is on my imminent to-read list, so this’ll be my opportunity to jump into it.

And that’s it! To achieve Alchemist, as stated, I have to complete all twelve of the above prompts. On the chance that I don’t, my NEWTs tbr will be altered to go after a career I’m able to get with the OWLs I did achieve. I’m hoping to get them all, though. So wish me luck!

If you’re participating in the Magical Readathon, let me know! Happy reading!
